If your family has a child or teenager with discipline problems, then you might need a guidance counselor with the professional experience to treat children. A professional counselor should know about activities that you can engage in with your children to improve their educational potential, behavior, employment potential, and discipline. It is important to remember that not all children are alike, so the guidance counselor might insist on your learning some family parenting tips and activities that can help you communicate better with a troubled or defiant teenager or child. This does not mean that your parenting is necessarily bad, but taking a different approach to your kids can help them improve their own behaviors and help them find better ways to communicate themselves. Tell the family guidance center’s counselor about any safety concerns that you have for your children. You might be worried that your teenager is using drugs that affect school performance and health. Perhaps you have already witnessed your troubled teen using drugs and alcohol. Depending on the severity of the problem, you might also need a therapist that can give your defiant child drug counseling as well as guidance. Ask the therapists if they are members of any advocacy groups to help you decide how seriously they take their jobs. If they participate in child advocacy and clinic groups, then they should have the most up to date information about positive behavior and mental counseling. Ask them if they accept your insurance plan or have a sliding scale to help you pay for the costs of the guidance counseling.
